View Full Version : Help!!!!!!!
GRENADIER 03-07-2010, 08:22 PM First of ll, my BF2's been running chunky, as Jon puts it, after about an hour. Come to find out that my card is getting hot. I installed evga precision and have the fan set to 90%, and it's still idling above 50. I reached a high of mid 70's while playing BFBC2 at medium settings. I have a 9800GTS with 1MG of video ram.
Now, I turned off my machine to clean out the dust and stuff. When I turned it back on, I have no connection. I've tried several different cables and it still says there's no cable hooked up. There are no lights blinkin on the back of my ethernet hook up. The device manager says it's working fine with no conflicts. I thought the ethernet hook up died but it still shows as working?????????????.
So I think I'll lower teh settings on my card and have to go get a separate ethernet card to get the internet through. Any ideas on what could have happened?
IgOtUr# 03-07-2010, 08:55 PM only thing i can think of gren is if ya pulled it out at all for anyreason maybe double check to make sure it is firmly put in the slot and check your cable where it goes intot he machine make sure the little bitty wires are messed up at all. or bent or moved over ect..
pas that i dunno..
Iggy
ehidden 03-07-2010, 09:24 PM forget the lights on teh back, they could be burnt out
does the router light, show a connection for your the port your computer is plugged into? if not try a different port? try a direct connection to the modem
if light on router but no connection...
-when you ipconfig, what is your ip is it a 192. adress, or 169. address?
does another computer get internet? your messaging me, so your internet works?
can you ping www.google.com
can you ping 192.168.1.1
-possibly driver got retarded, start>control panel>settings>device manager, right click unistall network lan device
then right clcik scan for new hardware, so the driver reinstalls itself
Gadget 03-08-2010, 10:46 AM just open the case. pop out the card, and move it to another PCI slot. try to put it in the PCI slot closest to your PCI-E slot. that should be your PCI 1. it will say so on the mobo but can be hard to read. should take care of your prob. sounds like an IRQ prob.
Nemesis 03-08-2010, 12:36 PM Is the NIC on-board or an add-on card?
Open the run window type "cmd" without the quotation marks.
Once you have command line window open. Type in "ipconfig"
What do you see?
You should see something like this:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 1:
connection-specific DNS suffix . : whateveryourispis.net
link-local IPv6 Address . . . . : bunch of gibberish here
IPv4 Address . . . . . . . . : your ip
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default gateway . . . . . . : your router or modem IP
EDIT: damint i formatted the above to look exactly like you would see in the window. the forum software removed all my formatting.
If nothing works, You may have met the almighty static discharge. I met that asshole once. Do you have someone you can borrow a a NIC from? If not one can be picked up for about $10 to $15. A spare NIC is something good to keep around the house. You can even temporarily borrow a NIC from another computer.

you can tell you have done IT in house somewhere. am i right? reminds me of when i worked for HP. hated those days. i was going to have him do a ipconfig/all but i thought moving the card into a new slot would force the drivers to be reinstalled and it would be easier for him that way. but at least this way he would know if its even talking to it.

Surprisingly i have not. Nearly all my friends are in IT. From Google to McAffee to Nokia Etc.
i am so used to seeing help files written for the layperson. I just type them out that way.
Might we suggest removing the driver before moving the card? It is the so called "proper way". Not that it seems to have ever made a difference for me.
Oh yeah: if he has an on-board nic. Disabling it in the bios.
Gadget 03-08-2010, 02:00 PM you could remove the drivers first, but you wont get bad registry entries by just moving the card. if you were going to install a different type of card then you would most definitely want to uninstall the drivers first. not trying to be argumentative, but i change pci cards like that and never have any probs. however he decides to do it, moving it from one slot to the next will force it to reconfigure all the settings and reinstall the driver. has worked for me many times in the past when putting a PC together.
Nemesis 03-08-2010, 02:43 PM No it is quite alright. It has been almost a decade since i had to mess with add on NIC's in anything other than a Linux box. All my windows rigs have had on-board NIC's for a number of years.
Gadget 03-08-2010, 05:30 PM i have also found that if a PCI card is giving you trouble to put it in the #1 slot. i have a few older mythbuntu boxes that i built and the TV capture cards will only work on the #1 slot.
GRENADIER 03-09-2010, 08:30 AM Thanks guys for all the help. I treid about everything and it didnt work. I even bought a new ethernet card, which installed and recognized but still no dice, (only 20 bucks). Then I unplugged the cable from the router and put it directly into the computer and guess what? everything worked, and I got almost 15 MB dl and 2 MB ul. Apparently, that port my comp was connected to at the router died.
My Linksys has been good for 5 years and now it's died. Today I bought a Netgear G wireless router so I can have wireless in the house too. Hopefully my dl speeds will increase with teh new router.
Once again, anytime I need tech help you guys come thru...........as always. Thanks again.
Tower 03-09-2010, 11:23 AM Better secure that wireless Connection use a strong password...
Gadget 03-09-2010, 12:30 PM NOOOOOOOO! not netgear. its a turd in a router case.
Hoggard 03-09-2010, 03:19 PM NOOOOOOOO! not netgear. its a turd in a router case.
LOL.
I've been using a wireless netgear for at least a couple of years now without any problems.
ehidden 03-09-2010, 03:26 PM ehem...
"does the router light, show a connection for your the port your computer is plugged into? if not try a different port? try a direct connection to the modem"
i use netgear also, and have found to be much more stable and reliable over other brands.
linksys
belkin
dlink
All crap, seen them all die.
Gadget 03-09-2010, 03:48 PM to each his own, and im not trying to change anyone's mind. but most hardware geeks will tell ya that netgear and d-link suck much butt.

thats a modded (DD-WRT) 32MB linksys with the famous cisco chip for $70. more options then you can get from a stock router, and far more secure. i know everyone's going to start posting about why other routers are better. blah blah blah. for the money this will blow away any new router.
marecki7 03-09-2010, 07:20 PM As far as your card getting hot, invest about $15 for a fan, which installs directly under your card.
I have installed one on my PC and it dropped the card temps an average of 15 C.
Before, I opened the window a bit, which worked OK, but my room would get very cold.
I have a 9800 GT and my fan is at 85 %.

I did. I have a LED internal fan that takes up a slot right next to the vid card. I've tried directing it onto and away from the fan, no dice. I lowered my settings to low and my max temp is only 65-70 now. Waiting for the 250/260 cards to drop a little more. They have better cooling and won't have to work as hard. Last night on medium settings, I played for about an hour and my screen started to flicker. I got out fo game and my card temp was 76. I have evga precision and have to keep turning the fan speed up. The auto control sux. It keeps the fan at 35% which would fry the card. Right now it's on 85%. I think if I keep the lower resolution and settings it'll get me thru until teh 250's drop in price.

get a zalman fan that mounts directly on the card and get rid of the stock fan. i have used zalman for a few years and no one can touch them. they are the shit.
GRENADIER 03-10-2010, 01:28 PM K, I'll take a look at them on newwegg, thanks for the tip
Gadget 03-10-2010, 01:46 PM i just built a hdpc for a friend. they dont need a high end video card so we rounded up an old agp nvidia 6600. we put this (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.acousticpc.com/images/a_zalman_vf700cu_4_pick.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.acousticpc.com/zalman_vf700-cu_quiet_vga_cooler.html&usg=__XbDMFkV1FglEGCFZcMeyfDfd4aw=&h=488&w=580&sz=179&hl=en&start=1&sig2=QWsV76utGGnq1WCzvks-2Q&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=lJ_E4TAL4XuADM:&tbnh=113&tbnw=134&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dzalman%2Bnvidia%2B6800%26um%3D1%26hl% 3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26tbs%3Disch:1&ei=eAOYS8SYD5noswPh24RA) zalman fan on it. i dont remember the exact specs but it went from being one of the hottest cards i have ever seen to one of the coldest.

I swear by these.
GRENADIER 03-11-2010, 02:54 AM I also tried this. I took the card apart and found that under the cover, the stock sink and fan was covered with dust. The fins were all clogged with dust and dog hair. I cleaned them all out, wiped the card down, and reapplied the thermal paste to the heat sink. My average idle and load temps are now 47-57 as oppsoed to 55-78 where they were before. I think this might get me by until the new generation of cards comes out.
sMITINGsAINT_aNGEL 03-20-2010, 01:38 AM It's amazing how much better a PC works after blowing out the dust. I use to play BF2 on the highest resolution setting & at one point I decided to drop it down to a little below 1/2 way. I played like that for a couple weeks & when I tried to bump it back up, I couldn't. Whenever I tried, things would flash all over my screen plus I had patches of blackness. My dad kept telling me to use the air compressor & blow out all of the dust. I kept putting that off b/c I really didn't think that was the problem. As soon as I did, I was able to play on the highest resolution again. I was amazed! Similar thing happened with the other PC.

yup, it sure is. the "glitches" you were seeing on your screen are called artifacts. you usually see those when your card is either really hot or has gone bad due to heat. it can also greatly shorten the life span of the said hardware. depending on how dusty your house gets and how many pets you have you might have to clean it out once a month. if you dont have an air compressor (be careful with those. too much pressure and you can destroy a card that way.) or a can of air grab a straw and blow on it. best redneck method i know.
CapStar362 03-20-2010, 03:22 PM the cans of air at walmart and sams club are the best. its this product here:
well shit i cant find it! ill grab a pic of it from work.
